To begin with Adam Smith wrote about the nature of human beings and their relation to the community. In contrast to moral relativism Adam Smith argued that it is in human nature that they are interested in the fortunes of other people. Smith moral philosophy suggest that people are social actors and their satisfaction as individuals depends on other happiness, moreover he claims that people are design in this way by nature. This definition of human nature is a clear contrast to Hobbesian moral relativism that human by nature is evidently driven by selfish motives and are in constant competition amongst each other. Contrary to Hobbes, Adam Smith wrote that people are social and other people concern us in the sense that individual feels pleasure from seeing other happy. People are capable of sympathy by nature and its enables social unity, in other words identity. But to be clear, the word sympathy in Smith’s work is used not as a moral sixth sense but more in the way of modern empathy. Empathy as an ability of willingness to relate relates someone’s feelings/emotions and experience similar perceptions. In the theory by nature design human beings are looking for common backgrounds because they want to share fellow feelings since mutual sympathy is pleasurable. Moreover, Smith’s sympathy is not only observing someone’s emotions, it is closer to spectator who gathers information about the actors and then works with it.
